The house

Before the room fills

At half past nine it is a different place. Nobody sees it, and that is a shame.

2 February 2026

Empty, the room is all ceiling and brass. Twelve low marble tables, green velvet, and a light that never rises in tone from the moment the door opens until the moment it closes.

Full, you never look up once. Both things are true; only one of them ever gets photographed.

The half hour before ten

Ice is cut, the clarified drinks come out of the fridge, and the first four records of the night go on the shelf behind the booth. Nothing about that half hour is visible later, and all of it decides how the night goes.

It is also the only time the room is quiet enough to hear the air conditioning. By eleven you would not know it exists.

Why the light never changes

A room that gets brighter as the night goes on is telling you to leave. Ours does not move: same tone at ten as at three, so nothing in the room announces the hour except the people in it.
