The door
The door has no sign, and that is the point
Inside Mezontle, past what looks like the end of the building. No plaque, no queue and no name on the street.

Playa del Carmen runs on one street. Everything happens on Fifth Avenue and everything is on display there: the menus outside, the music pushed onto the pavement, somebody at every entrance asking where you are from. It works. It is simply not what we wanted to build.
PRAYER is one turn away from that street, inside Mezontle, at the end of a passage that looks like the end of the building. No plaque, no queue, no name at the door. If you did not know it was there, you would walk past it tonight and every night after.
Why a speakeasy, and not a bar with a sign
A speakeasy is not a theme. It is a decision about volume. Fewer people, lower light, and a room where at midnight you can still hear the person next to you. Twelve tables and fourteen seats at the bar make that decision for us: when the room is full, it is full.
The difficult part was never hiding. The difficult part is being findable by whoever is actually looking for us. That is the whole job of the guest list, and it is the only door policy we have.
How you get in
You leave your name for the night. When you arrive you ask for PRAYER at Mezontle and they point you down the passage. Fluted glass and brass, no plaque. You knock twice.
There is no bell and there is nobody standing outside. That is not a test, it is the entire idea: the door stays quiet so the room can stay quiet too.
People ask us why we make it difficult. We do not make it difficult. We make it quiet.
